“Our goal was to speak out, to start a conversation about things that have been swept under the rug,” Iweajunwa said. “When I first arrived at the march, I admit I was terrified. Then I saw how many supporters were there, and it was heart-warming.”

After the City imposed a localized 7 p.m. curfew intended to curtail ongoing protests in downtown Dallas, marchers rallied on the edge of the curfew zone and marched away, onto the bridge, where they were met by a phalanx of police in riot gear, some firing chemical agents into the peaceful march; another line of police closed in behind the protesters, effectively trapping them on the bridge where they were detained for hours before being released.

The incident drew severe public outcry with calls for Dallas Police Chief Renee Hall’s resignation.

While the umbrellas served as a metaphor for refuge from brutality, they could also deflect less-lethal munitions fired by police, encourage social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic or act as sunshades in sweltering Texas heat.
